Obituary
Thurl Freeman entered this world as the son of the late Max and Hannah Freeman on November 26, 1956 in Rutherford County, NC. His life’s journey ended peacefully at the Charlotte Medical Center—Mercy on Monday, October 10, 2016 after a battle with illness. He attended St. John as a young boy where his family were faithful members. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Stanley Freeman.
His early childhood education took place in Rutherfordton. After high school, Thurl enrolled at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte where he majored in Architectural Technology; and took courses at LaSalle University in Chicago, Illinois where he majored in Architectural Design Technology.
He was formerly employed by Duke Power, Modular Space Corporation, Wisdom Builders, Inc., and DuPont where he served as Project Manager in each company. Because of his special skills, in 1991, Fluor Corporation moved Thurl and his family to Longmont, Colorado where he rapidly moved through the positions of Engineering Construction Manager, Project Manager Supervisor, and Project Architectural Designer.
Upon returning to the Charlotte area, Thurl sought employment with Secur America where he became lieutenant supervisor (Charlotte) until becoming ill. He also owned and operated his own company, named “A Thurl Design.” His portfolio contains numerous Certificates of Achievement.
He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, a Board member of AIA-Colorado North Chapter and a member of the Board of Mullen Bible Camp where he freely designed “code approved” structures and served as a volunteer. Thurl was also a member of Highlands Lodge #86 (Ancient Free & Accepted Masons) in Denver, CO. He was raised on April 24, 1999.
Thurl was known for his great sense of humor, pleasant smile and kind personality which will be sorely missed. He leaves to cherish his memory his four children: Daughters Rachel Freeman and Kensha Reid, both of Charlotte, twin sons – Kameron Freeman (Whitney) of Charlotte and Keith Freeman of Cape Canaveral, Florida, grandsons Kingston and Karson, sisters Brenda Burton, Dianne McCurry and Yvonne Gordon (Richard) of Lake Lure, two brothers, Eric Freeman (Sharon) of Charlotte and Earl O. Freeman of Lake Lure, sister-in-law Minnie P. Freeman of Charlotte, his former wife, Angela, of Kansas, and a “host” of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, relatives and special friends.
