Obituary
Tonia Denise Zimmerman (47), the only child of Lula Page-Rookard and Heyward Zimmerman, was born on September 9, 1968 at Fort Dix Hospital in New Jersey. After surmounting a courageous battle with Juvenile Diabetes, she succumbed to a brief bout with cancer early in the morning on June 7, 2016.
Tonia graduated from West Mecklenburg High School, Charlotte, North Carolina in l986. She continued her education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte graduating in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
In l998 she received a Nursing Degree from the Carolina College of Health Services.
During her school days, Tonia was an icon at the Food Lion on Little Rock Road in Charlotte where she started as a cashier and was promoted to a managerial position. Following college graduation, she was employed by Wilton Connor Packaging before returning to school to pursue a nursing degree. Although her diabetes caused her to pause her nursing studies, she let nothing stand in the way of completing this goal. She often said she was determined to complete this degree to give back the many acts of kindness shown her during her many stays in the hospital. She found her niche in the medical field, sharing her skills, and compassion at the Carolinas Medical Center and for the last 16 years at the Mecklenburg County Poison Control Center.
Traveling with friends and family was her number one hobby. For the past eight years, she was a passenger on the Tom Joyner Morning Cruise. Her motto was “Live, Love and Laugh” and “Work Hard, Play Harder.”
Tonia joined Love’s Chapel Presbyterian Church in Belmont, North Carolina where she was baptized.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Carrie Page and her paternal grandmother, Dorothy Gordon.
Left to forever cherish her fond and loving memories are her mother, Lula Page-Rookard, Charlotte, North Carolina; father, Heyward Zimmerman (Geraldine), Atlanta, GA; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, and her best friend, Clevetta Ward.
