Vermell H. Drayton

May 19, 1940 — February 4, 2025

Vermell Hazel Drayton departed this life on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. Born on May 19, 1940, in Allendale, South Carolina, to the late Johnnie and Claudia R. Drayton, Vermell’s life was a testament to service, education, and the joy of giving. She was predeceased by her beloved sister, Claudette D. Riley, and leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted sister, Jannell D. Reed of Charlotte, NC and a loving aunt, Mildred Harper of New Haven, CT, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will forever hold her in their hearts.

Vermell was educated in the Charlotte public school system and was a proud graduate of Johnson C. Smith University, an institution she held dear and championed throughout her life. She pursued her passion for helping others by earning a Master of Social Work (MSW) and dedicated her career to serving communities in Hartford, CT, New Haven, CT, and Los Angeles, CA, where she later retired.

Beyond her professional achievements, Vermell embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. She was an avid reader and found joy in traveling, golf, tennis, and attending sporting events. A lifelong learner, she explored her creative interests by taking courses in fashion design, culinary arts, and jazz. Known for her generous spirit, she was always willing to extend a helping hand, encourage education, and uplift those around her.

In her later years, Vermell returned to Charlotte, NC, where she deepened her faith as a devoted attendee of First United Presbyterian Church, worshiping alongside her sister. She also found joy and companionship at West Charlotte Community Center, where she engaged in social activities and formed meaningful connections.

Vermell’s warmth, wisdom, and unwavering generosity touched the lives of many. She will be profoundly missed by her family, friends, and community, but her legacy of kindness, service, and lifelong learning will endure in the hearts of all who knew her.

Rest in peace, dear Vermell. Your light will continue to shine in the lives you’ve touched.
