Verna V. Crooks

Verna Veronica Crooks, beloved mother, grandmother, godmother, sister, aunt, and loving friend passed away peacefully at the age of 82.

Verna was born in Kingston, Jamaica, to Vernon Crooks and Zephrine Welch.  After graduating high school, she migrated to England where she completed nursing school and earned certification as a midwife, marking the beginning of a career that spanned more than four and a half decades, culminating as Nursing Supervisor in the newborn nursery of Englewood Medical Center in New Jersey.  Verna's legacy of love and compassion allowed her to help birth hundreds of newborn babies into the world, bringing much joy to their families as well as herself.

Her greatest joy was found in sharing time with family and friends. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, traveling, crocheting, and helping those in need.

Thank you for your calls, text messages, voicemails, emails, love, and prayers. They are appreciated much more than you know.

A special Thank You to all of her caretakers, especially the staff at Ofa's Private Home Care.  We will be eternally grateful to each and all of them.

Her family and friends will forever cherish their memories of her soft Jamaican-British accent, her gracious and caring manner, her gentle wit and wisdom, and her faithful loving kindness.

Verna is survived by her sons, Christopher Crooks (Geraldine) and Abraham Barakhyahu (Khaliyah). She was a proud grandmother to Anton Crooks (Janie), Tomas Brown-Crooks, William White, Jana Lia White, Hadarah Barakhyahu, Keturah Barakhyahu, and Navah Barakhyahu.  She is also survived by her sister Glo Wan (Clive), and nephews: Luigie (Susan), Andrew (Deborah), and Jason (Bora).

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Ms. Crooks will take place on Saturday, August 24, 2024, with Family Visitation at 11:30 am and the service starting at 12:00 pm, in Alexander Funeral Home's Chapel, 1424 Statesville Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28206

The family will receive friends immediately after the service on the campus of Brisbane Academy, 5901 Statesville Road, Charlotte, NC. 28269
