Wayne “T-Bird” Eugene Funderburk

On August 8, 2021 Wayne Eugene Funderburk, affectionately know as T-Bird, of Charlotte, NC passed away in the presence of his family 8 years after surviving a massive stroke. He was preceded in death by his father Eugene Funderburk, mother Maude Funderburk, brother John Funderburk, and sister Brenda Chandler. He is Survived by wife Jenny Funderburk, his sister Louise Workmen and 3 sons Derrick and wife Crystal, Jeremy and wife Casey, and Timothy Funderburk his wife Margaret, and grandchildren Derrick, Jeremy, Courtney, Tyler, Riley, Bryce, James, Destiny, Joshua.

Born in Charlotte, NC October 17, 1949 he worked for the City of Charlotte water department for many years and also delivered papers for The Charlotte Observer.  “T-Bird” is best known for opening and running the Tae Kwon Do studio “The Screaming Tigers School of Tae Kwon Do”. He would teach wherever he could, often teaching in the street in front of his home before finding a building to teach in.   He ran this school for many years in the Dilworth neighborhood where he taught many kids from surrounding neighborhoods.  He would often teach these underprivileged kids for little to no cost.  He is also known for coaching his three sons in the different sports they participated in.  He also started the Queen City Karate Classic Tournament that was held at Johnson C Smith University.  That Tournament was one of the best on circuit having competitors coming from many states far away.

Wayne Funderburk was Husband, Father, Businessman, and Coach.

A Graveside service will be held at Beatties Ford Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 11am Saturday 8/14/21
