Like a committed, courageous soldier of the Cross, William R. Belk, marched victoriously intoeternity on June 14, 2019. He was a much loved and deeply grateful patient at Atrium MedicalCenter, Pineville, NC. “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord”(Corinthians 5:18).William was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on January 13, 1948. The son of Roscoe Belk andAllean Belk, the loving brother of Geraldine Davis, Benjamin Belk, Peggy Ann Belk and AlfredBelk who preceded him in death.Being reared in a Christian home, William became a member of Saint Luke Baptist church at anearly age. He was educated in the public schools of Charlotte, North Carolina and a graduate ofYork Road High School. After graduation, William was drafted by the United States Army. Heserved his country for two years. Private First Class Belk distinguished himself by exceptionallyvalorous actions on May 12, 1968 in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as a rifleman in the3d Platoon, Company B, 2d Battalion, 1 st Infantry, 196th Infantry Brigade. He received a BronzeStar Medal V Device for heroism in Connection with Military Operations against a hostile force.After returning home, he worked at the Federal Reserve Bank in Charlotte, North Carolinaas a special policeman. William also was a well respected professional bus driver for theCharlotte Transit System and enjoyed greeting, meeting and ministering to individuals. Heretired after 20 years of service.William was the Patriot of the Belk family and always encouraged them. He was a friendly,lovable, kind person and a joy to be around. Spending time with family and friends made somehappy times in his life. During his leisure time, he enjoyed watching westerns, war stories,traveling and a good meal. William will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.William leaves to cherish loving memories a wife, Toxie , sons, Brad Beatty ( Rena), TimothyStewart, and Detrick Belk (Charlotte, NC), stepdaughters, Kenitra Gilmer, Ebony Haskins(Darold) (Charlotte, NC), sisters, Mildred Jackson, Luella Crosby, and Paulette Owens (Charlotte,NC), Father-in-law, Otis Burch (Pageland, SC), Sister-in-laws, Barbara Goodwin(John),(Pennsylvania), Angela Lockhart (Pageland, SC), Brother-in-laws, Billy Joe Burch(Alma),(Charlotte, NC), Kevin Burch (Pageland, SC), 12 grandchildren and a host of nephews,nieces, cousins and friends.
