William Anthony Scurry

October 24, 1952 — September 2, 2017

On Saturday, September 2, 2017, God summoned one of his faithful servants, William Scurry, at the age of 64 to his heavenly home. William known to many as “Bill” was born on October 24, 1952 in Sharon, Pennsylvania, to loving parents, the late William Henry Scurry and Cassie Lucille Barnes Scurry. William was raised in Buffalo, New York, where he attended Buffalo public schools, and played football for Bennet High School. He graduated from North Carolina A&T State University where he was on the wrestling and swimming teams.     While working in Poughkeepsie, New York as a recreational therapist, he met the love of his life, Margaret “Margo” Scurry. The couple married on May 23, 1981. Next to God, family was an unwavering priority and from the beginning William’s only son William Anthony (“Tony”) Scurry became a part of the everyday life of William and Margo.  From their union two beautiful daughters were born, Danielle and Brittney Scurry.  In 1998, William and Margo were excited when Mpho-Dipalesa Notrem, William’s oldest daughter who grew up in Lesotho relocated to Charlotte allowing the four siblings to become a cohesive unit cherished and loved unconditionally by William and Margo.   The arrival of his grandson, Max Notrem-Iwuchukwu was without question a new source of excitement and adventure for William as “G-Pops”. In 1982, William and Margo settled in the Queen City, which became William’s city. Charlotte became the place where William nurtured his marriage, raised his children, perfected his profession as a realtor, gave and received from his community, and served his God with all his soul, mind, and heart.   For a brief time, William took over ownership of an ERA real estate office and later commenced a 25 year broker career with Allen Tate Realtors. For 30 years, along with his team of agents, he passionately assisted more than 2000 individuals and families in finding their dream home. More recently he shared his talents and enthusiasm for real estate by mentoring and training new brokers.   William was a long-time and active member of his church, The Charlotte Church, where he previously served on the board. He and his wife, Margo led many souls to Christ through their outreach and relationship with God. They most recently launched a Care and Compassion Ministry to help meet the needs of those experiencing suffering.   He gave back to his community by serving on several local boards within the Charlotte community, including the YMCA (Dowd and University City locations), University City Partners, Charlotte Regional Realtor Association, Alzheimer’s Foundation-Western Carolina Chapter, and most recently the Charlotte Housing Authority.   William leaves to honor and cherish his memory, his loving wife, Margo S. Scurry; his devoted son, William Anthony Scurry II; daughters, Mpho-Dipalesa Notrem, Danielle A. Scurry and Britney N. Scurry; one grandson, Max Notrem-Iwuchukwu; brother, Jeffrey Keith Scurry; sister-in-law, Cynthia Reed Scurry; nephew, Oji Scurry; and nieces, Tammeric Itson-Scurry and Adriana Scurry. William was predeceased by one brother, Warren Chauncey Scurry.   William had seemingly conquered his battle with cancer, but passed away after complications from a recent surgery at Huntersville Oaks.   Services will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the University City United Methodist Church 3835 West W.T. Harris Charlotte, NC 28269. A viewing will be held at 12 pm, with funeral services at 1 pm.   In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations to be made in honor of William Scurry:   The Oral Cancer Fund at Levine Cancer Institute.
