Willie Mae Blakeney, a beloved mother, grandmother, great and great-great-grandmother, was called home to rest in God's loving arms on October 29, 2023, at the age of 89. She passed away peacefully in Matthews, NC at Royal Park of Matthews Rehabilitation & Health Center.
Willie Mae was born on June 23, 1934, in Lancaster, South Carolina to Christine Adams and Soulee Blakeney. Raised by her great-grandmother Emma Adams in the same town, she developed a deep love for her community and the people around her.
Throughout her life, Willie Mae worked as a dedicated domestic worker, respected among her peers and neighbors. She was also a self-taught seamstress, whose skill with a needle and thread was admired by all who knew her. Her love for plants and her passion for canning fruits and vegetables, often sourced from thrift stores, garage sales, and flea markets, became cherished hobbies that brought her joy.
Willie Mae's selfless nature and gentle spirit endeared her to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her warm smile and open arms welcomed anyone in need. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her two sons: Horace Blakeney (Debbie) and Rayford Adams, two daughters: Lynette Blakeney and the late Ellen Jean Adams, and her nephew Junior Horton (Suzanne), son of her late sister Edna Horton. Additionally, she will be greatly missed by her eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Willie Mae Blakeney will forever be remembered for her unwavering dedication to her family, her kindheartedness, and her ability to bring joy to those around her. Though her presence will be deeply missed, her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all those blessed enough to have known her.
As we reflect on the life of Willie Mae, let us celebrate the love and joy she brought to our lives. May her soul find eternal peace, and may her memory continue to inspire us to love, care for, and cherish one another, just as she did throughout her remarkable life.
