Willie Mae Johnson, daughter of the late Ernest Cassell and Nancy Herron.
She was born February 17, 1930, in York, South Carolina, and departed this life at Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster on April 16th, 2021, at 7:40pm. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than fifty years, Willie Mack Johnson, son, Wayne Johnson and daughter, Nancy Hamilton. Also, siblings Haywood, Lamont, John Earl, Stella, and Ernest T.
She was born and raised on a farm where she had to help with harvesting the cotton fields. She also helped with raising her siblings while raising twelve of her own in addition to four other children. She has been a faithful warrior for Christ for more than fifty years. She always served in the capacity of church mother, prayer warrior, and missionary. Her favorite song is “Faith, faith, faith, just a little bit of Faith.” She was not only a church mother but worked tirelessly behind the scenes in the kitchen preparing dinners and helping with fundraisers. She was a great believer in “Faith without works is dead” and taught her children the same.
She worked as a domestic worker for many years, where she met and befriended many wonderful people like Dottie Patterson (deceased), and Wanda and Russ Young. Wanda and Russ continued, until her demise, keeping in contact and making sure she was well. She trusted Wanda Young’s judgement so much that she helped with the pre-burial plans. She also enjoyed many years with Mother Butler as her prayer partner. At least two times a day the two would be on the phone encouraging each other and praying.
These are a few of many illustrations of Mother Johnson’s effect on family, extended family and friends. She will truly leave a void in our hearts.
Mother Johnson leaves to cherish her memories, Martha Mae Johnson, Willie Mack Johnson Jr. (Sadie), Larry Johnson (Della), Barbara Johnson (Chris), Betty Nelson, Carolyn Wallace (Mike), David Johnson, John Earl Johnson, Ricky Johnson (Celeste), Sallie Johnson, Donnie Cassell, Hazeline Flood (Nathaniel), and Sheila Nelson. One sister, Pastor Hazeline McClendon (Roosevelt); 30 grandchildren, a host of great-grands and great-great-grands, many extended children and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
