OBITUARY
Zenobia G. Hagans
Mrs. Zenobia Gray Hagans, fondly known as “Zee” and “Momzy”, departed her earthly life peacefully at home on March 26, 2016. She joins James, her husband, Jade, her daughter, her mother Laura Dunham Gray, her father John Gray and nine brothers.
Zenobia was born on April 2, 1921 in Charlotte, North Carolina and educated in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system. She attended Emanuel Lutheran College in Greensboro, North Carolina and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Johnson C. Smith University. She was the first African American female to receive a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education from UNC Charlotte.
Beginning her teaching career in Belmont, North Carolina, Zenobia eventually came to teach in Charlotte and retired after 34 years. Fondly talking about them over the years, she truly loved every moment of teaching.
Zenobia had many friends who always kept in touch with her, especially her cousin Pauline Avant who called her everyday. Being an amazing gardener, she grew beautiful flowers and vegetables. When asked how she was, “Fair to midlin” was always her reply. Being a firm believer in education, Zenobia encouraged many to learn as much as they could. People gravitated to her amazing smile, kind nature and sound advice. She loved her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren and adored the grand dog “Suki”.
Many churches in the city have been privileged to have her as choir director and organist, as she could play by ear, transpose music to a different key and also read music. She taught piano and music for a number of years to children as well as adults.
Zenobia was a faithful member of Chums, Inc. well into her 90’s.
She leaves to cherish her memories to her daughter, Cheryl Savage of Waterbury, Connecticut; granddaughters, Lauren Savage of Connecticut and Rriauna Hagans of Brooklyn, New York; grandson, Michael C. Savage of Waterbury, Connecticut; great grandchildren, Christopher Savage of Springfield, Massachusetts, Amari Savage of Waterbury, Connecticut and Tiana Thurman of Waterbury, Connecticut as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

“THE BROKEN CHAIN”
We little knew that morning,
that God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide,
and though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same,
but as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again.
