George W. Lindsay

March 28, 1942 — July 22, 2022

Service: Saturday, July 30, 2022 Place: Steele Creek AME Zion Church 1500 Shopton Road Charlotte, NC 28217 Time: 3PM Visitation: 2PM - 3PM Interment: Steele Creek AME Zion Cemetery OBITURARY George William Lindsay, or “Boby” as some affectionately knew him, entered this world on March 28, 1942 in Lancaster, SC to George and Nettie Mae Lindsay, as the eldest of ten children. He graduated from Barr Street High School and then attended Johnson C. Smith University for several years before entering the job force. George worked for General Tire (which later became Continental Tire) for 29 years and one month before retiring in 2006. “A good and faithful servant” best describes George’s dedication to Steele Creek A.M.E. Zion Church. A member of the Gospel Choir, he sang several solos. Many will recall his rousing rendition of the gospel song “Testify” and how it always brought the congregation to its feet! He served faithfully as a member of the Trustee Board for many years and often volunteered to serve in whatever capacity he was needed at the church. George also was a longtime active member of Zechariah Alexander Lodge #833 where he held several prominent positions over the years, including treasurer, Junior Warden, Senior Warden, and class instructor/lecturer. He later joined the Charlotte Consistory #35. An avid sports fan, you could find George cheering on his beloved Atlanta Braves and Dallas Cowboys, whom he always said were going to make it to the Super Bowl every year no matter what their record was! Having grown up playing baseball in the country, his passion for the game continued through to his participation on Steele Creek A.M.E. Zion Church’s previous baseball team—then a part of the Christian Athletic Association—and by coaching its previous ladies’ church softball team for several years. In fact, it was at a baseball game down in Edgemoor, SC where he met his future wife Annie Bell (Ann) Buckson. Married for 53 years, George and Ann were united in holy matrimony on June 28, 1969 and were joined at the hip ever since. Daughter Angela and son Christopher were born of their union. For all of his dedicated church and community activities, his greatest loyalty was to his family. George rarely, if ever, missed one of his children’s recitals or sporting events and was excited to receive videos of his grandchildren’s athletic and academic accomplishments. He looked forward to Johnson C. Smith University’s Homecoming parade and football game every year with a stop in between for lunch from The Chicken Coop. It was an annual family tradition. He loved “dear old J.C.S.U.”, and you could often spot him wearing the school’s paraphernalia—especially his cap with the Golden Bull on it. Another thing you could often spot him with—a toothpick, either in his mouth or behind his ear! He also enjoyed attending the annual Witherspoon-Strain Family Reunion and only missed it a few times in its 61-year existence. In his free time, you could find him watching MSNBC or listening to music by his favorite singing group, The Temptations. Many may not know that he had an affinity for classical music as well, which he would be listening to when picking his kids up from school, and that he could cut a rug on the dance floor! He was a voracious reader, favoring James Patterson novels, and was particularly fond of hunting and fishing, having grown up doing both. George was also a pretty good cook, often trying out new recipes and helping prepare meals with The Circle of Friends for their monthly meetings. He had a sweet tooth and looked forward to the box of desserts he would get from “down home” every Christmas, particularly his sister Frances’ (aka New New’s) lemon chess pie, and he loved his wife’s German chocolate cake. A fighter to the end, our wise and merciful God gently closed George’s eyes at exactly 6:00am on July 22, 2022, allowing him to gain his angel wings and to go be at eternal rest. George was a shining example of what it means to be a provider and protector, earnest and honest. He was bright, funny, talented and humble—a treasure to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Left to cherish his memory are: his wife Ann; their two children: Angela of Charlotte, NC and Christopher (Brittany) of McClellenville, SC; four grandchildren: Kaden, Aspen Mae, Nathan and Natalie of McClellenville, SC; four brothers: Rev. Otis Lindsay (Louvenia) of Charlotte, NC, Lafayette Lindsay of Lancaster, SC, and Lewis Lindsay, Sr. (Cheryl) of Fort Mill, SC; three sisters: Daisy Cuthbertson (Melvin) of Monroe, SC, Ruthie Morrison (Henderson, Jr.) of Monroe, NC, and Frances Tyson (Minster Hampton) of Lancaster, SC; god-daughter: Stephanie Hills of Charlotte, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jackie Lindsay, Sr. and Phillip Lindsay, a sister, Mae Louis, and his parents.
